Averil Mansfield, Chairman of Council 2004 - 2008
Professor Averil Mansfield became Chairman of Council on 1 January 2004. She has been a Trustee of The Stroke Association since 1992 and Vice Chairman of Council from 2001 to 2003. She is also a former Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Up until 2002, Averil was a vascular surgeon working at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College. She became a Professor of Surgery at the hospital and was the first UK female to achieve this. One of her interests was in the surgery to the carotid artery for the prevention of stroke.
Her term of office expired on 31 December 2008 when Sir Charles George succeeded her. She continues her involvement with the Association as an honorary Vice President.
2009 sees her become President of the BMA.
