Dr Joanne Knight

Joanne joined The Stroke Association in May 2003 as Director of Research and Development.

She is responsible for the distribution of The Stroke Association’s £2.5 million annual expenditure on stroke research, the delivery of stroke training, the production of the Stroke Matters magazine for care professionals, the annual UK Stroke Forum conference and the UK Forum for Stroke Training project to endorse stroke training courses from other providers.

Joanne graduated from the University of Oxford with a doctorate in Chemistry. She started her career in the pharmaceutical industry, before moving into the management of medical research funding within the charity sector in 2000.

Joanne explained what her role involves, "It is really important that I ensure The Stroke Association funds research in hospitals and universities of the highest quality to advance our understanding of how to prevent a stroke and develop new treatments. By working in collaboration with other research funders we encourage them to support stroke research as well.

"Through our training and education activities for care professionals we are working to improve the standard of care for stroke survivors. Being cared for by someone who really understands the effects of a stroke and its impact on your life can make such a big difference. I am determined to make sure as many stroke survivors as possible receive high quality care by trained care workers."
