Moving on - image of a man lifting his walking frame up in the air with a look of triumph on his face

Moving on is our joint campaign with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. We are both calling for better access to community based (post hospital) physiotherapy for stroke survivors.

The evidence we hear from stroke survivors and respected institutions such as the National Audit Office and the Royal College of Physicians shows that, on the whole, the care stroke patients receive in hospital is now better than ever.

However, the picture is quite different when stroke survivors leave hospital. We believe that the improvements made in the hospital phase must now be replicated in what we call the ‘life after stroke’ phase.

Our survey of over 1100 stroke survivors and physiotherapists found that:

  • One in five stroke survivors who need post-hospital physiotherapy don’t receive any on the NHS
  • Of those who have had physiotherapy after leaving hospital, over half receive it for less than three months.
  • Half the stroke survivors who had a positive experience of community-based physiotherapy feel it helps them to be less reliant on their carers.
