The evidence
To identify a snapshot of current experiences of community based physiotherapy, we surveyed 1160 stroke survivors and physiotherapy staff in the Summer/Autumn of 2009.
Based on the results of both surveys, we have identified a number of areas surrounding these services which need improvement.
- First, we found that one in every five stroke survivors who felt they needed community based physiotherapy did not receive any on the NHS. Many had to fund their physiotherapy themselves or were left with nothing. This is unacceptable and must change.
- Second, we found that far too many people who had been told they would receive physiotherapy had to wait long periods of time for their first session. 25% of stroke survivors told us that they had to wait longer than one month which we feel undermines the progress made whilst in hospital.
- Third, we found that too many stroke survivors are receiving physiotherapy which has a ‘one size fits all’ approach with the quantity based more on the resources available than the needs of the stroke survivor. We are calling for a more individually tailored community based physiotherapy service in our campaign.
- Finally, it was clear from the responses we received that physiotherapy is vital in improving stroke survivors’ independence. This not only benefits the stroke survivor but also their carer. Therefore we are calling for the role and needs of carers to be valued in the physiotherapy journey.
