Carer’s Award

The role of a carer in supporting a stroke survivor can be a vital part of their recovery. People caring for stroke survivors face practical and emotional problems that can often be challenging, distressing, and sometimes require considerable sacrifice. Equally it can be immensely rewarding. This award is for a person who continues to demonstrate their commitment to caring by providing personal, practical and emotional support for a stroke survivor.

Winner - Pauline Moore, aged 70, Crawley

Picture: Award presenter William Gaminara, winner Pauline Moore, Mick Moore

Pauline cares for her husband, Mick Moore, who had a stroke in 2001, aged 59. Pauline has very little time for herself, just a few hours when Mick attends a day centre twice a week.

Mick could only say two words after his stroke and has been in a wheelchair ever since. He experienced periods of serious depression and has also experienced chronic central post-stroke pain.

Pauline provides much needed emotional support to Mick. Pauline has attended to Mick’s personal care although recently he has managed to do this for himself. She also helps with dressing, always giving him a choice of clothes so that he maintains some independence.

Pauline is extremely motivated and has researched options to help Mick’s recovery including pain relief, specialised software for people with aphasia, special computer equipment, art materials, talking books and many day-to-day gadgets that help him lead a fuller life.

They have also redesigned their small garden so that Mick is able to get out in his wheelchair and maintain the patio
containers and enjoy bird watching.

Pauline is encouraging and together they organise things so Mick has meaningful activities in which to participate. She also offers much support to other carers and the volunteers at the Communication Group.

Pauline is positive, practical, proactive and is totally dedicated and committed as a carer.
