Excellence in Stroke Care Award
A wide range of health, social care and other professionals work tirelessly to reduce the impact that stroke can have on people. This award recognises exceptional service in the provision of stroke care. In 2009 the award is presented to a physiotherapist who has demonstrated their commitment to raising the quality of care for people experiencing difficulties following stroke.

Winner: Award presenter Brendan Cole with winner Dr Fiona Jones
Fiona has been working in the stroke field for over 20 years. She is a physiotherapist and principal lecturer working in the faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences, which is a partnership between Kingston University and St George’s Hospital, University of London.
Fiona created the Stepping Out project which is a personalised stroke self-management training programme to help stroke survivors and practitioners with the rehabilitation process.
This programme includes a training workshop for various healthcare professionals and thereafter one-to-one personalised training sessions for the stroke survivor with the trained therapist or nurse.
Fiona developed the Stepping Out project through consultation with stroke survivors, professionals and carers.
Fiona delivers workshops across the UK to other professionals and has also created a workbook to assist stroke survivors with this rehabilitation process.
Fiona is respected at all levels of the physiotherapy profession and has considerable dedication – not only researching and supervising postgraduate students, she also teaches on the undergraduate programme influencing all levels of physiotherapists.
She is compassionate, practical and pragmatic and makes stroke survivors feel involved in every step of their journey.
