BASP Stroke Service Specification
The Stroke Association continues to campaign for better stroke provision within the NHS. We want every hospital to have a properly resourced and staffed stroke unit. There is plenty of evidence to show that stroke patients who are treated on a stroke unit have a greater chance of surviving, and a much better chance of making a good recovery. We want all hospitals to have a stroke service which, at the minimum, meets the criteria set out in the National Service Framework for Older People's chapter on stroke.
But what do we mean by a good stroke service?
The British Association of Stroke Physicians specification for stroke answers that question, setting out what hospitals should be doing for their complete stroke service.
The specification is useful for survivors and carers who would like to check that the unit that they are in is adequately resourced and working to a good standard.
