Other developments for the Stroke Strategy

Social care
The Stroke Association was delighted that the Government made money available to local authorities that is ring fenced to help develop support  services and care for stroke survivors.

The 152 local authorities with responsibility for adult social care will each receive on average £100,000 per year for three years. Some Local Authorities have used this money to commission services from The Stroke Association.

Details of how this money can be used are described in the downloadable Local Authority circular LAC(DH) (2009) 4, 'Demonstrating how to deliver stroke care for adults in the community'.

National Audit Office
The 2005 National Audit Office (NAO) report, 'Reducing brain damage: faster access to better stroke care', played a major role in highlighting the deficiencies in stroke services and ultimately led to the Department of Health producing the Stroke Strategy.

The NAO has been charged by the Committee of Public Accounts to produce a further report before the end of this Parliament. This follow-up study will examine the extent to which the recommendations made in the previous report, and subsequent Committee of Public Accounts report, have been implemented.

The study will also evaluate whether current services offer value-for-money by assessing stroke care against the quality markers set out in the National Stroke Strategy (2007). This report is due for publication in December 2009.
