Current campaign

Our campaigns are incredibly successful in changing the way stroke is dealt with in this country.

In May 2008, we launched the Lost without Words campaign to highlight the needs of the estimated 250,000 - 300,000 people in the UK who live with a communication disability following a stroke.

Communication disability can include losing the ability to speak (usually called aphasia) or understand what people are saying. We will be raising awareness of these issues and lobbying for better services for those affected.

The campaign is calling for:

  • the ability to communicate to be recognised as a basic human right for all stroke survivors
  • an increase in access to communication support groups for stroke survivors.

The research carried out as part of the campaign showed that communication support groups help:

  • improve communication skills
  • increase confidence and independence
  • reduce social isolation and depression
  • give carers vital respite.
