Lost without Words
Our latest campaign Lost without Words highlights the needs of people who live with communication disabilities following a stroke, and how greater awareness amongst the general public and access to services that can help those who are affected would make a big difference.
The campaign was launched in the East Midlands at an open day held by The Long Eaton communication support group on 26 June. Local health and social care providers together with members of the group and other guests attended. David Ash, Service Development Manager, Mike Tristram, Service Co-ordinator, The Mayor of Erewash and group members are pictured here at the launch.

Maureen supports The Stroke Association yet again

Maureen Stockwood handing over a cheque to David Ash

Maureen Stockwood has been a committed supporter of The Stroke Association for many years. Over the last five years she has nominated The Stroke Association as her charity of the year on no less than three ocassions, first as Mayor of Bingham, then as Mayor of Rushcliffe and most recently as President of The Inner Wheel. In between she also managed to find time to be arrested in a Jail and Bail swoop.
David Ash, Service Development Manager, attended the Inner Wheel AGM in Shelford Village Hall on 11 June to thank the group for their support and was presented with a cheque for £2,000. A full cash box and an individual donation which was also given to David on the night boosted the total by more than £300.

Blood pressure testing
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the major risk factors for stroke. However, it usually has no symptoms which is why it is so important to get it checked.  Three Stroke Association blood pressure testing events recently took place in the East Midlands:

Nottingham
On Tuesday 13 May, Stroke Awareness For Europe Day, a team from Nottingham took over The 'Jerry's Tank' area of The Victoria Centre, and attracted a lot of attention. The event saw a successful partnership of staff from The Stroke Association and The Nottingham University Hospitals Trust Stroke Service, to check blood pressure and provide information to 400 people.
In the picture below a local policeman takes time out from his busy day to get blood pressure advice from Nottingham City Hospital Stroke Service Ward Manager Amanda.

Ripley
Christine Bell, Regional Information Officer, Ripley and Amber Valley Rotary Clubs, The British Red Cross and Ripley Parish Church joined forces to check the blood pressure of  over 150 people on Saturday 3 May as part of the Rotary Stroke Awareness Day.

Derby
Christine Bell and Mike Tristram, Communication Support Co-ordinator, were really busy checking blood pressure on Thursday 8 May during the Liberation Day event at Derby Assembly Rooms. Mike and Christine, assisted by Mary Smith, Stroke Co-ordinator Derbyshire County PCT, Ida Buist, Amber Valley Stroke Club and Sue Lewindon, The Stroke Association, checked the blood pressure of over 100 people.
