London Stroke Action Council

The London Stroke Action Council is a campaigning group that exists to:

  • highlight the lack of community support available to people who’ve had a stroke across the Capital
  • give advice to providers who want to develop stroke services
  • arrange enjoyable activities for people affected by stroke in London.

Stroke survivors formed the London Stroke Action Council because of the shocking revelation that, despite excellent acute stroke services in the Capital, only one in eight people leaving hospital after stroke get the community support they need.

Some have described the experience of coming home as being like 'falling off a cliff', unless you are lucky enough to live somewhere with proper community support.

The London Stroke Action Council wants to see an end to this postcode lottery.

Abdul Shakoor, the current Chair of the Council and a stroke survivor from Newham says, 'When I had my stroke, there was no support whatsoever once I got home from hospital. I joined the London Stroke Action Council because I wanted to do something so that no one else would have to experience what I did.'

All members of the national stroke Campaigners Network who live in London will automatically receive updates on the London Stroke Action Council’s activities.
