Local volunteering
This page will keep you updated with local volunteering opportunities. Supporting our volunteers is very important to us; we run volunteer induction days and each volunteer is supported by a named member of staff.
Life After Stroke Services opportunities:
- Blood Pressure Events: We run Know Your Blood Pressure Events in London and need support from volunteers who perhaps have a medical background and could support us at these events. Please call Ellen on 020 7940 1341 to find out more.
- Stroke Awareness Ambassador: If you live in any of these boroughs: Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Ealing, Kensington & Chelsea, or City of Westminster boroughs and would like to help us to keep GP surgeries or hospital wards stocked with our important publications so that stroke information is communicated to the people who need to know, please call Ellen on 020 7940 1341.
- Volunteer Drivers are needed for stroke clubs in Lewisham, Greenwich and Waltham Forest. Some members are no longer able to afford transport costs and so are missing out on socialising with other stroke group members. The three groups meet fortnightly; Lewisham and Greenwich on a Wednesday morning and Waltham Forest on a Friday afternoon. - Greenwich Communication Support Group needs volunteers in Charlton on Thursdays 10:30am-12:30pm, and in Eltham on Tuesdays, 10:30am-12:30pm. Call Talmadge on 020 8697 1636.
- Lewisham Communication Support Group needs volunteers to practice communication skills with clients, either at home or in a care home. Volunteers are required on Tuesday and Friday mornings, for up to one hour. Call Elisha on 020 8695 6557.
- Croydon Communication Support Group needs a Bulgarian-speaking volunteer to assist one of their stroke survivors at the group, which meets on Thursdays 10:00am-12:00pm. They are also looking for some visiting volunteers, preferably on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please call Clare on 020 8763 0199.
- The Young Croydon Stroke Group is looking for a volunteer who could help the committee with the running of the group, in particular if you enjoy making calls and booking speakers and co-ordinating outings then they'd like to hear from you, please call Ellen on 020 7940 1341.
- Hillingdon Communication Support service needs volunteers for group or home visiting. Volunteers are required from Monday to Friday. Call 01895 431146/07515 596 959.
- Barnet Stroke Support service is looking for volunteers to befriend, listen and give one to one support to stroke survivors in their homes. Availability: Two hours a fortnight, Monday-Friday during office hours. Training will be provided. - Harrow Family and Carer Support service is very keen to recruit volunteers who would be interested in providing support to stroke survivors. For details please call Gillian Dunne on 020 8906 0073.
- North Kensington Stroke Group is a small, newly formed group. They meet every second Friday afternoon of the month and would welcome some help if you have the time and commitment to spare. They are working on a programme of activities which is going very well and they hope to gain a wider membership. If you have admin skills or enjoy working with figures you could really help this group to develop. - Waltham Forest Stroke Support Group is looking for a volunteer to join the existing volunteers who organise and run their sessions. If you are available on a Thursday afternoon and would like to be part of this very friendly group and you have admin or money handling experience we would love to hear from you. The Partnerships Team is very keen to recruit a volunteer who would be interested in providing office support and administering the affiliation of Stroke Clubs across the UK etc. The person would be based in the London Regional office in London Bridge.
