Speechmatters in Northern Ireland
Speechmatters merged with The Stroke Association on the 9 October 2006.
Speechmatters, formed in 1991 as Action for Dysphasic Adults and renamed in 2001, is the only dedicated provider of aphasia support in Northern Ireland. Aphasia (Also known as dysphasia) is a devastating communication disability which affects a person’s ability to understand and process language following a stroke or head injury. There is a great synergy between Speechmatters and The Stroke Association, as both already provide communication disability services and family support services and involve volunteers in delivering services. Speechmatters, now part of The Stroke Association, will continue to lead in providing support to the 10,000 people in Northern Ireland with aphasia and this merger will ultimately result in a greater investment into aphasia and stroke services.
