Local Volunteering Opportunities

Want to make a difference?

Volunteer with The Stroke Association Northern Ireland!

Volunteering is ultimately about helping others and having an impact on people’s well-being. What better way is there to connect with your local community and give a little back?

There are many reasons why people choose to volunteer with a charity; it might be to help people, learn new skills or put existing ones to use. Sometimes it is to gain confidence or create a sense of personal reward or to socialise. Whatever the reason, your support is vital to the success of the organisation and our services.

The Stroke Association Northern Ireland currently has over 600 volunteers. Through volunteering, you will hopefully gain satisfaction knowing that your support will make such a significant difference to not only the work of The Stroke Association but to the lives of stroke survivors and their families.

Anyone over the age of 16, whatever their race or religion can volunteer. You can offer as much time as you wish, however some roles may require specific commitment over a period of time. An AccessNI check may be required for certain roles and out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Volunteers can support us in a variety of ways:

  • Be an Ambassador for The Stroke Association by giving talks to community groups, distributing literature, attending events, using Facebook or Twitter etc. Play a vital role in creating a better awareness and understanding of stroke by speaking out in support of us and our activities.
  • Join our Campaigners' Network and help us to lobby local government and create awareness of stroke. You will be kept updated with all our campaign activity such as 'FAST', 'Ask First', 'Know your Blood Pressure' and relevant government consultations as well as receiving tips on how to construct your own local stroke campaigns.
  • Help raise vital funds in many different ways such as:
    • participating in fundraising events
    • running your own fundraising event
    • helping with collections
    • promoting our products e.g. wedding favours
    • joining a local Committee.
  • Get involved in our Rehabilitation and Support Services by providing a wide range of support such as group activities, one to one support and communication practice.
  • Help with transport by becoming a Driving and Transport volunteer. You can provide stroke survivors with or without carers, comfortable and safe access to Communication Support Groups, appointments, outings and other events. All it takes is a few hours of your time and the use of a car.
  • Become a Media Volunteer by sharing your story and personal experiences with others through the media. Reading about how stroke has affected your life could really make a difference to someone who has recently experienced stroke and will also be invaluable in raising awareness.

Whatever your reason for volunteering, The Stroke Association NI would greatly welcome your support.
