The Stroke Association in Scotland
Stroke is the third biggest killer in Scotland and the leading cause of impairment and disability. Approximately 12,500 people have a first stroke in Scotland each year. There are an estimated 100,000 stroke survivors in Scotland.
The Stroke Association has funded stroke research in Scotland for over 15 years but only opened its first national office in April 2007. During 2007 and 2008, the new Stroke Association Scotland team networked and consulted with a wide range of stakeholder groups, including stroke survivors and carers, key professional groups, health and social care providers and other national voluntary organisations. This allowed us to:- better understand the needs, challenges and opportunities for stroke in Scotland
- lay the foundations for our future work
- establish positive and collaborative relationships with other organisations.
Informed by extensive consultation, The Stroke Association has identified its priorities for work in Scotland over the next few years. These will include:
- campaigning to raise awareness and understanding of stroke
- activities to support stroke prevention
- initiatives to help improve the quality of life and well-being of people affected by stroke
- helping stroke survivors and carers to have greater control over their lives and the support and care they receive.
