Jersey
The island of Jersey is situated 161 kilometres (100 miles) south of Great Britain and measures 118 square kilometres (46 square miles). Thirty per cent of the island’s population is concentrated in the town of St Helier.
The population of Jersey is estimated to be around 90,000 of which approximately 44,325 (49.25 per cent) are male and 45,675 (50.75 per cent) are female.
Jersey has an ageing population, and the main reason for this is the emigration of younger people seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Every year, an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK. It is also the single most common cause of severe disability. More than 250,000 people in the UK live with disabilities caused by a stroke.
Jersey is no exception with 125 people having a stroke every year, and around 400 families coping with long-term disabilities.
The Stroke Association in Jersey
Stroke rehabilitation services in Jersey are provided by a dedicated professional team. The Stroke Association are pleased to be working with the team to identify gaps in current service provision and to be able, with the financial support of Lloyds TSB, to provide additional services to fill those gaps.
Two members of staff are now employed in Jersey, providing a comprehensive long-term support service for stroke survivors and their families and carers. There is also a group specifically designed to support people with communication disabilities. Volunteers are being recruited, trained and supported to extend the reach of the services. Although tailored to local need, these services are based upon tried and tested models and are supported by the wider Stroke Association team.
Our services are supported by a Jersey Branch Committee, including health care professionals and local business people, who regularly meet to support and steer the work of the Branch.
