How can family help?

Family carers can learn the practical measures needed to look after someone recovering from a stroke, but they will be facing mental and emotional changes too, which can be more difficult to deal with.

Negative feelings

After a stroke, stress, anxiety, feelings of grief and other psychological changes are inevitable. These can cause depression in the person who has had a stroke and the whole family. It’s important that carers don’t let these negative feelings get in the way of recovery and rehabilitation.

  • Phone and book

  • Be as patient as you can - progress can seem very slow sometimes, but people can continue to recover for years after a stroke.
  • Look after your own health - get enough sleep and make sure you eat properly.
  • Keep up with your own hobbies and social activities - you need a life outside your home.
  • Ask for help - find out what services and resources are available and use them.
