Returning home
Going home can be daunting for people who have had a stroke and their carers. Most people will not be fully recovered when it’s time to leave hospital and are likely to need ongoing rehabilitation at home.

Caring for someone who has had a stroke is physically and emotionally demanding. The person may need help even with simple tasks like washing and dressing. They may have difficulty understanding and communicating their wishes and feelings. They may be depressed or have mood swings. After the first spurt of recovery after a stroke, improvements are gradual and this can be frustrating for everyone.

For the best long-term recovery, it’s important to get as much support as possible from local health services and social services.

"I'd say to other people in my situation, don't give up. I was determined I was going to recover. Positive thinking can help you succeed." Maggie Chisholm
