Aphasia
Aphasia is a communication disorder where a person loses the ability to use and understand language.
When some-one has aphasia they know what they want to say but cannot find the words. He or she may also have problems with reading and writing. People who have aphasia can find it hard to understand what others are saying, even though hearing and thought processes are unaffected. A person with aphasia may literally be "lost for words".
At any time there are around 250,000 people in the UK who have aphasia and many of these people will be under retirement age.
Aphasia is also known as dysphasia.
