Eyesight
Stroke can affect the parts of the brain that control eyesight.
To be able to see we need not just our eyes but also a normally functioning brain. The eyes send information about the world around us down nerve fibres which pass all the way through the brain to the back (occipital lobe) where the information is processed and interpreted. If the stroke affects any of these parts eyesight may be damaged.
The most common problem with eyesight after stroke is the loss of one half of the field of vision. You can see everything over to one side but are blind on the other. This is not due to a problem with the eyes and visiting an optician won't help. As with other problems after a stroke the majority of patients recover.
