Driving after a stroke

When can I drive again after a stroke?

Someone who has had a stroke or TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack) is not allowed to drive for a month. After a month if you have made a full recovery and your doctor (GP or consultant) agrees you are fit to drive, you can get behind the wheel again.

If you are still recovering after a month then you may need to tell the DVLA what has happened. Our factsheet on driving after a stroke tells you what to do next and gives you useful addresses if you want to find out more about having a driving assessment or vehicle adaptations.

The situation is different if you drive a heavy goods vehicle, or if you have had a seizure following a stroke.
Our free magazine Stroke News tells the story of someone who battled to regain their driving licence after a stroke.

Our leaflet After a stroke has more information about what to expect, and describes the help and support available to someone after a stroke.
