Stroke is a particularly serious problem for African-Caribbean people in Britain. It is estimated that people of African-Caribbean origin are twice as likely to have a stroke as European people. They also tend to have their first stroke at a younger age. This factsheet explains what a stroke is, the risk factors that affect African-Caribbean people in particular, and suggests some simple lifestyle changes to help reduce the risk of stroke.
