The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa. Hemiplegia refers to the paralysis of one part of the body, either temporarily or permanently. If the right side of the brain is damaged, left hemiplegia can occur. If the left side of the brain is damaged, right hemiplegia can occur. As well as physical effects, a stroke can cause a range of cognitive and visual problems. This factsheet explains the different ways in which someone with hemiplegia may be affected.
