14 Speech and language therapy after stroke

Type: Factsheets

Code: 01F14

Speech and language therapy can help people who have swallowing problems or communication problems after a stroke. Therapists work in hospitals and in the community to assess people and provide a treatment plan. With communication problems, the service is usually provided for a certain amount of time and does not carry on indefinitely. Whilst the initial consultation may be carried out in the home, thereafter, therapy can be in the form of written communication, telephone calls, exercises and activities. This factsheet explains what therapies are available, how therapy can help, and how additional support can be found, including private therapy.
