The Stroke Association is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Averil Mansfield CBE as its new Chairman of Council. Professor Mansfield joined Council in April 1992 and became a member of the Executive Committee in 2001 on her appointment as Vice-Chairman of Council.
She replaces Lord Skelmersdale, who is standing down after 10 years. Lord Skelmersdale is now an opposition spokesman on health in the House of Lords.
Margaret Goose, OBE, Chief Executive of The Stroke Association paid tribute to the work of Lord Skelmersdale and looked to the future: "Under the guidance of Lord Skelmersdale, the profile of stroke has gained prominence, most crucially in the eyes of the NHS, with its inclusion in the National Service Framework for Older People. I am delighted that Professor Mansfield will continue this work, promoting the understanding, prevention and treatment of stroke and developing the profile of the organisation".
Averil Mansfield was until recently a vascular surgeon working at St Mary's Hospital. She began her career in Liverpool and moved to London 20 years ago. She became Professor of Surgery at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College and was the first UK female Professor of Surgery. One of her surgical interests was in surgery to the carotid artery for the prevention of stroke. Averil Mansfield is a former Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons.
