The Stroke Association response to 'Gordon Brown pledges new preventative NHS'

"Today's announcement by Gordon Brown is welcomed by The Stroke Association.

An estimated 150,000 people in the UK will have a stroke each year.  Stroke is the third biggest killer and a leading cause of adult disability, but there is nothing inevitable about these figures.  High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for stroke and screening such as that suggested by Gordon Brown will help to detect this often symptom less condition.  This along with advice on lifestyle will help save thousands of lives."

1. The Stroke Association is the only UK charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages.  The charity funds research into prevention, treatement, better methods of rehabilitation and helps stroke patients and their families directly through its community services which include communications support, family and carer support, information services, welfare grants, publications and leaflets.  The Stroke Association also campaigns, educates and informs to increase knowledge of stroke at all levels of society acting as a voice for everyone affected by stroke.
