Response to Government's plans to tackle the obesity epidemic
23/1/2008
Joe Korner, Director of Communications at The Stroke Association commented:
“The Stroke Association welcomes the Government’s commitment to tackling the obesity epidemic. Being obese or overweight greatly increases the risk of stroke, especially through increases in blood pressure – the highest risk factor for stroke. Over 40% of strokes could be prevented through tackling high blood pressure.
“It is vital that the positive moves by Government to improve stroke services and to reduce the incidence of stroke are not undermined by the obesity time bomb which, if left unchecked, will increase the numbers of people at high risk of stroke.”
