Response to Peter Hain, Secretary of State for Wales' statement on smoking in public places in Wales

12/11/2004

The Stroke Association welcomes the announcement by Peter Hain, Welsh Secretary of State, that restrictions on smoking are likely to be introduced in Wales as a result of UK government legislation.

However, The Stroke Association believes any new legislation in Wales must include a mandatory ban on smoking in all public places - the only way to effectively reduce the health risks associated with smoking. Every year over 130,000 people in England and Wales have a stroke and a quarter of all of these strokes are linked to smoking.
