Response to 'super pharmacists' offering health advice

04/09/2006

Joe Korner, Director of Communications at The Stroke Association commented: "Stroke is the UK's third biggest killer and is the leading cause of severe adult disability. It is vitally important that people are aware of how they can try to prevent a stroke from happening. Pharmacists with special interests could help to drive these messages home.

"Fifty per cent of strokes are caused by high blood pressure which is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. Exercising regularly, eating healthily, cutting salt intake and stopping smoking are also ways in which people can reduce their risk. If this new Government initiative can help to reduce the estimated 150,000 strokes that occur in the UK each year, it will be very welcome."
