The Stroke Association's response to the stroke strategy consultation

"The launch of the stroke strategy is of vital importance and we warmly welcome the new focus on stroke from the Department of Health that today's announcement embodies. The lives of many thousands of people in the UK will be profoundly affected by the new Strategy, which could determine the future of stroke care over the next ten to fifteen years.

"There is a strong consensus among patients and stroke professionals for what needs to be done. Local health providers need a strong blueprint for action, with national recommendations that can be implemented and measured locally.

"In many ways the National Stroke Strategy could be a test of the devolved decision making that Alan Johnson wants to see across the NHS. However, it is vital that there are adequate resources to make sure that the good intentions in the strategy will be translated into urgently needed action."
