Long-term Support Service
People who have had a stroke and their carers value continuity, being kept informed, being included and having a clear, consistent point of contact with services. (National Stroke Strategy) The Long-term Support Service is designed to reduce social isolation, promote emotional well-being and confidence, and encourage people towards self-help and individual responsibility for their own health. This service provides support for stroke survivors and their carers to set up new groups offering a wide range of information and activities to meet local needs. To ensure the viability of groups in the long term, The Stroke Association has developed a framework within which the groups are developed. Procedures and protocols ensure financial security and adherence to legislation. Initially set up and facilitated by a Stroke Association employee, support and training is given to volunteers to enable them to run the group themselves with minimal support.
