Carer training

‘Nobody ever told us how to be a carer.’

It is a complaint we hear all the time. Stroke often arrives as a bolt from the blue, and few people are prepared for the responsibilities suddenly thrust upon them.

The associated cognitive and communication problems make caring for somebody who has had a stroke particularly challenging.

Our carer training courses provide information and practical advice to help people care for somebody affected by stroke.

We offer both one-day courses and modular sessions running over several weeks. Courses are open to all carers, who are often referred to the course from other Stroke Association services.

Training is provided in small groups, with talks, presentations, discussions and question-and-answer sessions. Carers are also given leaflets and hand-outs to take away.

We also offer more specialised communication training for carers of people with aphasia.

Outcomes
• Carers become more confident and better equipped to care for people affected by stroke
• Raised awareness of stroke and its risk factors, reducing the likelihood of stroke reoccurring
• Improved health and wellbeing for carer and cared-for
• Less hospital readmission due to fewer accidents and a higher standard of care
