Caring for people affected by stroke - What next?

This is a follow-up course for people who have attended the Caring for people affected by stroke course (CFPABS).

Aims

The delegates will develop an understanding of a person’s journey from the onset of the stroke to transfer home and beyond.

Objectives

By the end of the day participants will have an understanding and awareness of:

  • Basic anatomy and physiology of the brain
  • The different types of strokes that might occur
  • The ideal stroke care pathway
  • The roles of those involved in caring for the patient throughout their journey
  • Diagnostic tests and their uses  
  • The FAST score and its purpose
  • The mechanics of swallowing and what can go wrong
  • Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) feeding – to include patient care and feeding styles
  • The need for a balanced diet and healthy nutrition.
