Informal carers' training

This half day programme allows family carers the opportunity to learn about stroke, to have an understanding of the problems the stroke person may have, to explore some of their own issues and concerns, whilst networking with others who find themselves in a similar situation.

Aims: 

This training aims to provide those caring for people affected by stroke with some knowledge and understanding about stroke

Objectives: 

  • To know what a stroke is, what causes a stroke and some of the effects
  • To understand how a stroke can affect movement, mobility and continence.
  • To know what happens when we swallow  and how having a stroke can impair a person’s ability to swallow
  • To know about positioning and other factors  which can assist safer and more comfortable swallowing
  • To be aware of  dietary needs and oral care needs
  • To know about the range of communication problems which may be experienced by a person who has had a stroke
  • To know about the sensory and cognitive problems which may be experienced by a person who has had a stroke
  • To  know about the common psychological effects of stroke
