The Stroke Association Rehabilitation Research Centre
Institution:University of Southampton
Principal Investigator:
Professor Ann Ashburn
Region: South East
Status: ongoing
A research centre to investigate rehabilitation interventions for stroke patients was officially opened on 28 January 2004 at Southampton General Hospital.
Professor Ann Ashburn received a Stroke Association research award to set up and run the new centre, which will allow a team of researchers from the University of Southampton to work together with clinicians from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Southampton NHS Trusts.
The results of their work will provide doctors, nurses and therapists with the evidence needed to help convince NHS commissioners to develop improved clinical services. This will enable more and more people in the UK to lead independent lives after stroke.
The new centre in Southampton follows on from the success of the first centre devoted to stroke rehabilitation research, at Hope Hospital, University of Manchester, which was set up by The Stroke Association in 1996.
