Good control of blood pressure (BP) in people who have had a stroke reduces the likelihood of having another stroke. This usually involves a visit to the GP, but increasingly patients are taking their own BP at home. Knowledge of whether home BP monitoring is a good way of controlling BP, and if it is useful in people who have had a stroke, particularly those who are disabled, is required.
Before home BP monitoring becomes widespread there is an opportunity to compare BP, after a year, in stroke patients who are given a BP machine to use at home, with support from a specialist nurse, with those having usual GP care.
This study will also use information from the South London Stroke Register. If this study shows that home BP monitoring is acceptable, effective and cost effective, this simple intervention could be extended nationwide and improve the health and quality of life of people living with the effects of stroke.
