Caucasians have a genetic basis for stroke. It is not known yet whether other ethnic groups have the same genes as Caucasians that are linked to the occurrence of stroke. There have been a number of studies that have tried to investigate this subject but the number of people used has been too small to generalise the findings.
The statistical technique of meta-analysis allows all the available data to be combined in order to answer a particular question. This is a more reliable technique than just using the results of one study. This study aims to create a database containing all of this information, which will be regularly updated and available to researchers in the future. As all the information will be together it will hopefully be possible to determine the causes of stroke, rather than just suggesting links to possible causes. For example, the database will allow research models based on genetics to investigate which biochemical components in blood cause stroke, which could lead to new drug treatments.
