Family and twin studies suggest that some of the causes of stroke might have a genetic basis. In a disease with many possible underlying causes, identifying this inherited risk is difficult.

We have looked at over half a million areas of the DNA from pooled samples of individuals who have and haven’t had a stroke. From these we have identified some areas of the DNA that are different between the two groups, and hence might be implicated in causing stroke.

We now wish to look at potential genes which might be responsible in a much larger group of individual patients and controls. If we identify genes which are different, these may represent potential targets for preventative treatments in the future, or help improve the understanding of what causes this often devastating illness.
