Principal Investigator:
Professor Charles Wolfe
Region: London
Grant value: £251,271 over 60 months. £250,000 extension for further 60 months
Start date: March 1999
Status: ongoing

People who have had a stroke are 15 times more at risk of having a further stroke than those who have not had one. This study will use a number of methods to prevent further strokes from occurring (secondary prevention).
South London has been identified as having a population particularly at risk, with poor access to primary care facilities. The programme will focus on improving communication between patients and health professionals, and the management of clinical risk factors. The role of stroke prevention practitioner will also be created, which should improve the flow of information and enable patients and carers to voice their concerns more easily, encouraging the development of better coping strategies.
