Most strokes are due to blood clots in arteries supplying the brain. A great deal is now known about the influence of risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking and blood fats. However, much less is known about the clotting power of the blood itself.
This project is to check the accuracy of records in a long-term study with two purposes. The first is to see whether overactivity of the clotting system also contributes to stroke. The second is to assess the long-term value of anti-clotting medicines (aspirin and warfarin) in the prevention of mainly heart attacks, but also strokes.
A doctor will use the records from the study to check the accuracy of the clinical records against the codings used in the statistical analyses, so that there will be a high level of confidence in the results.
