Stroke is often thought of as a disease of old age but around a quarter of the 110,000 strokes occuring in England each year happen to people of working age. There is evidence that current services do not meet their needs and this study aims to inform the development of new services, or propose changes in the way services are currently provided to meet these needs.
This study will use existing data and newly collected data from the South London Stroke Register to quantify the needs of working age adults who have had a stroke, and the quality of care that they receive. Interview research will be used to investigate the impact, experiences and needs of working age adults who have had a stroke from their own perspective.
The study will also identify current practice for working age adults who have had a stroke in different settings; through a survey and case studies. Using this information new models of care to meet the needs of working age people who have had a stroke will be developed and piloted.
