Recent key achievements

The Stroke Association commits approximately £2m per year to vital stroke research. The following key achievements have resulted from this funding:

Staying Physically Fit After 40 Cuts Risk of Stroke (Neurology 2007; 69:2243)

Quick treatment following TIA or minor stroke could reduce the risk of a major stroke by 80 per cent (Lancet 2007: 370, 1432)

Looking after a member of the familyPilot study shows the benefit of occupational therapy for stroke care home residents (Stroke 2006; 37: 2336-2341)

A tool as easy as ABCD to predict and prevent stroke (Lancet 2005; 366: 29-36)

The FOOD trial - Feeding policy for patients with stroke (Lancet 2005; 365: 755-63. Lancet 2005; 365: 764-72)

 Preventative surgery should be carried out within 2 weeks of stroke symptoms (Lancet 2004; 363: 915-24)

Support for specialist training. This includes Fellowships for doctors (26 to date) to contribute to the delivery of better stroke care, and Bursaries for Allied Health Professionals (22 to date) to improve the provisions for stroke rehabilitation.
