UK Stroke Research Network

25 January 2007

The establishment of the UK Stroke Research Network (UKSRN) is an exciting development for stroke research. It is part of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration established by the Department of Health in April 2004 as a means of bringing together the National Health Service, Medical Research Council, medical charities and industry to increase and accelerate the development of new treatments to benefit patients.

The decision to include stroke as one of the six topic research networks within the UK Clinical Research Network is recognition of the considerable developments in stroke services in recent years, and the as yet unrealised potential of UK stroke research.

A consortium from Newcastle University, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, Birmingham University, Glasgow University, Nottingham University and Oxford University have established the National Coordinating Centre for the UKSRN.

The aims of the UKSRN are to facilitate the conduct of randomised prospective trials and other well-designed studies relevant to stroke. The network will enhance NHS stroke research capacity by increasing collaborative working within the UK stroke research community, improving links with academic and commercial funders, and removing barriers to stroke research in the NHS.

People who have had a stroke and their carers will be actively engaged by the network in developing and delivering the UKSRN research strategy. The £4 million annual funding to the UKSRN will considerably enhance and facilitate the funding of stroke research.
