The Stroke Association is incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and is governed by a Council of Trustees who automatically become directors of the company.
There are currently about 20 trustees. The term of office for trustees is three years and there is a maximum of three terms that they can serve.
Although we have a number of stroke survivors and medical experts on the Council, you don't have to be either to be considered. Anyone can be put forward as a trustee and people may nominate themselves, or someone else they think may be suitable (with their consent). However, the legal duties and responsibilities of being a charity trustee require a high level of integrity as well as expertise in one or more areas.
In order to have the necessary range of skills available to the Council we need people who have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Medical / clinical / therapy.
- Public health.
- Commercial / business acumen.
- Knowledge of the community / political experience.
- Experience of stroke / disability.
- Marketing / media / PR / lobbying skills.
- NHS / social services / public sector.
- Third sector experience.
There are a number of committees that oversee various aspects of the organisation (eg audit, investment, research) for which specialist expertise is required.
Trustees need to be able to contribute to discussions concerning the strategic direction of the Stroke Association. They play a key role in monitoring the implementation of our corporate strategy, agreeing variations in strategic emphasis and solutions to issues and obstacles.
Trustees are required to attend meetings and undergo induction training. They must not be disqualified from acting as a trustee or a company director. Trustees are also expected to represent the Stroke Association in a number of ways outside of formal meetings, which requires a degree of commitment.
If you have experience in one or more of the areas referred to above, and are prepared to devote the time and energy required, please let us know and send in your CV addressed to:
The Company Secretary
Stroke Association House
240 City Road
London EC1V 2PR.
If and when there is a vacancy for a trustee role that fits your skills, your CV will be considered by our Nominations Committee. The committee members may wish to interview people before making any recommendation to the Council.
