This project aims to find out if peer support can avert some of the adverse psychological consequences of aphasia: the language and communication disorder that affects about 15% of those who have a stroke. Stroke survivors with long-term aphasia will be trained as peer befrienders.
This study will explore whether an existing therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), can be used for people with aphasia. Information will also be collected to design a future large-scale trial evaluating this approach.
Problems of mood, thinking and memory are common after a stroke. There has been limited research around these issues. This work aims to answer fundamental questions around who develops these problems and how they recover.

Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is usually associated with high blood pressure, and causes 20% of all strokes. It is the main cause of cognitive changes and dementia associated with stroke. Behavioural symptoms such as apathy are also common in patients with SVD.
This study will show whether more intensive lowering of blood pressure (BP) in survivors of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) is feasible, safe and effective in reducing brain injury. If successful, the study will pave the way for the design a larger definitive trial.
Small Vessel Disease (SVD) is a disease of the small blood vessels in the brain and can lead to stroke and dementia. At the moment, we don't know how to stop SVD developing, or how to treat it. This Lectureship aims to improve future clinical trials that aim to prevent SVD.
Vision problems are common after stroke. This Lectureship will investigate the link between the tasks used in vision rehabilitation and everyday visual activities. It will also use brain scanning to investigate the effects of rehabilitation on activity in the areas of the brain responsible for vision.
