Vision problems are common after stroke. This Lectureship will investigate the link between the tasks used in vision rehabilitation and everyday visual activities. It will also use brain scanning to investigate the effects of rehabilitation on activity in the areas of the brain responsible for vision.

Clinical trials are conducted to test whether a new medical intervention is safe and effective and these trials often rely on the participation of volunteer stroke survivors.
Neil Johnson from Airdrie in Scotland had a stroke at the age of 32. The effects were devastating - he couldn’t walk or talk. After months of rehabilitation, Neil wants to raise awareness that a stroke happens in the brain and can happen to anyone of any age.
There are other, less common problems, that can happen after stroke. These include seizures or epilepsy, hallucinations and a very rare condition known as locked-in syndrome.
How important is the relationship between therapist and stroke survivor in the rehabilitation of language ability?
This research will investigate the use of orthitics (for example, braces and splints) early on in a stroke survivor’s rehabilitation. The results will inform a larger study into early orthotic use after stroke.
Everyday talking involves being able to understand sentences, something that can be affected by aphasia. This research will design and test a new therapy which aims to help improve understanding of everyday sentences in people with aphasia.
