For over thirty years the Stroke Association has invested in research that has changed the lives of stroke survivors just like Karen. But the coronavirus pandemic has caused massive disruption to stroke research, and we’ve seen a dramatic reduction in our income.
Stroke survivors and healthcare professionals have identified problems with thinking and mood after stroke as some of the most important issues faced after a stroke. This Lectureship aims to test treatments to help stroke survivors with their cognitive (thinking) difficulties.
The findings of this research could help provide stroke survivors and their relatives with more accurate information about what impacts they can expect over time, and will help doctors and therapists identify which patients with visual neglect will benefit the most from new treatments.
Two-thirds of stroke survivors have problems with their sight after stroke, and around half of these will be left with long term sight problems. This new research programme aims to establish better treatment and support for stroke survivors with vision loss after stroke in the UK.
Stroke survivors often have very individual hopes for the future, in terms of the goals they would like to achieve. This research will develop and test a Goal setting and Action Planning (G-AP) approach to achieving personal goals through community rehabilitation.
This research can improve a camera-based computer programme so it can be used by health care professionals and stroke survivors to help in physical rehabilitation.
Understanding the difficulty in controlling emotions after stroke
No two strokes are alike - the damage from each stroke leaves its own unique signature on a person's brain and behaviour. The current project will investigate how different types of stroke affect a person's long term recovery or deterioration
Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an unusual form of stroke. It is little researched largely because it accounts for less than 1% of all strokes. The study will provide a much better understanding for the reasons underlying CVT, which is an unusual but very important cause of stroke in young (mainly female) adults.
People who have survived a previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) are at particularly high risk of subsequent, ‘recurrent’ stroke with 30% having another stroke in the following five years. High blood pressure is the most important reversible risk factor for having a recurrent stroke.
