A stroke can sometimes cause changes to your taste and smell. Things can taste different or taste bad (dysgeusia) or you may not taste flavours (hypogeusia or ageusia). Some people lose the sense of smell (anosmia) or become more sensitive to smells (hyperosmia). The European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2018 took place between 16-18 May in Gothenburg, Sweden. The third day of ESOC featured new research which identified how to improve stroke care worldwide – from simple measures in low to middle-income countries, through to refinement of advanced techniques for acute and preventative stroke treatments.
After a stroke, some people have difficulty swallowing. Food and drink can go down the wrong way into the lungs instead of the stomach. This can cause a serious chest infection. The intended outcome of this project is to find new knowledge to help guide future policy on the reduction of chest infection risk after stroke.
