TENSION is a new international study funded by the EU, and hoping to extend the benefits of mechanical thrombectomy to more stroke patients.
Pilot trial of devices to extract clot from occluded arteries (PISTE)
The NICE guidelines on use of mechanical clot retrieval (thrombectomy) are a very welcome development in the treatment of stroke. Although a relatively small number of patients will be eligible for this procedure, research shows that the outcomes for those patients are often very good and better than they would have been without the intervention.
Presented at the International Stroke Conference 2016, the final results from the PISTE trial (Pragmatic Ischaemic Stroke Thrombectomy Evaluation) add new evidence for the effectiveness of mechanical clot retri
About 80% strokes are caused by a blocked blood vessel. One third of these patients have a blockage of a large blood vessel in the neck or brain known as large artery occlusion stroke (LAOS).
At present it is not clear how best to organise NHS services so that patients can benefit from thrombectomy for stroke. The Institute of Heath Services, Newcastle University, has produced an online survey to understand the preferences of stroke survivors, their carers and the public on the future of stroke thrombectomy service organisation in the UK.
MR CLEAN is a Dutch trial that investigated treatment of a severe form of ischaemic stroke (blockage type stroke) with thrombolysis alone (dissolving a clot with clot-busting drugs), versus treatment with both thrombolysis.
The first day of the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2017 in Prague included some truly inspiring scientific sessions. These included reporting from the DAWN study which suggests that more patients could be able to receive mechanical thrombectomy after stroke.
On February 11, at the International Stroke Conference (ISC 2015 in Nashville, USA) the latest findings were released from four, large studies investigating the effect of treating patients with mechanical clot retrieval.
