Stay a healthy weight
Being overweight increases your risk of having a stroke. So it’s very important to try to maintain a healthy weight.
High blood pressure
High blood pressure is one of the biggest stroke risk factors. It strains all the blood vessels in your body, including ones leading to your brain.
What can I do to reduce my risk?
Many strokes can be prevented. Although you cannot change some of the things that increase your risk of stroke, like your age, there are others that you can change.
Simple swaps: cutting back on salt
High blood pressure is one of the biggest risk factors of stroke. It usually has no symptoms but is a contributing factor in around half of all strokes.
High cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is found in our blood. Reducing your cholesterol level can reduce your risk of stroke.
Fasting after a stroke

Transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
A transient ischaemic attack, TIA, or mini-stroke, is the same as a stroke, but the symptoms last a short time. A TIA is a warning that you are at risk of having a stroke.
